Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley celebrated five local women at the annual “Live Your Dream” Awards which provide scholarships for education and training in the applicant’s field of choice.  The February 16th ceremony presented a $1500 scholarship to Valarie Gonzalez as Soroptimist International’s Big Bear 2017 “Live Your Dream” Award Winner. Craig Brewster – 2015 Man About Town

Big Bear, CA, May 18, 2015 – On Sunday evening, the Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley’s 2015 Man About Town Campaign came to an end with a Western Ho-Down at Northwood’s Resort. This years theme was “Charging Forward for Women’s Health” and for the last six weeks, Mike Kostiuk, Rob Robbins, and Craig Brewster have been holding events to raise money to support local women’s health programs including Soroptimist’s annual mammogram program. The skits performed at the finale were especially funny this year with the men on Mike Kostiuk’s team dancing around in cowboy boots and nighties. Truly a sight that won’t soon be forgotten. Soroptimist of Big Bear Valley Awards Locals in Community Service

Big Bear Lake, CA, February 20, 2015 – Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley honored three local women, one business and one organization on Thursday, February 19th at their annual awards ceremony entitled this year “Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women”.  The Soroptimist Ruby Award was presented to Patty Hafen and Marilyn Vecchio, two women who have demonstrated the ability to improve the quality of life for other women or girls in our community.  Patty Hafen was honored for her years of fundraising efforts and dedication to Big Bear Valley’s schools and Marilyn Vecchio has served in healthcare in Big Bear for over 30 years with positions at the Bear Valley Community Healthcare District and the Mom and Dad Project.  Single mother of three, Amy Rose, received the Women’s Opportunity Award and a scholarship towards pursuing her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.  SIBBV also recognized Nancy and Gus Gonzales of the Hacienda Grill restaurant with a Business Appreciation Award and the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake received the Organization Appreciation Award for all the good they do for our community.  In addition to Soroptimist’s awards, Assemblyman Jay Obernolte presented each honoree with a California Legislature Assembly Certificate of...

Men Competing to Raise Money for Women’s Health

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 10, 2014 – This year’s Man About Town fundraiser will benefit local women’s health programs, and Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley has named the campaign “Healthy Women Make Healthy Families.” Under that umbrella are proactive practices for physical health–such as getting regular mammograms and following a lifestyle to prevent diabetes–and also mental health, which includes knowing how to avoid an abusive relationship, and how to seek help for depression. There are also programs to support financial health, like money management education and career counseling. The candidates are Ray Hino, Jim Miller and Michael Natzic, and they have a busy few weeks ahead of them raising money for the campaign. Each dollar equals one vote, and the man with the most dollars will be crowned Man About Town 2014 at the May 18 finale event at Northwoods Resort.
