Snow or Shine, the Race is on

Big Bear Lake, CA, February 14, 2014 – One slogan of our annual snowshoe race is, “If you can walk you can snowshoe,” and given our dry winter, this year’s competitors may actually be on foot. Organizers say the 7th Annual Snowshoe the Bear will go on February 22nd at 10:00 a.m., even if turns out to be a trail run. Event producer Karen Lundgren is keeping her fingers crossed for snow, but knows that dry land shouldn’t discourage outdoor enthusiasts. She says, “The rewards of running in Big Bear’s backcountry are priceless with beautiful pine trees and Big Bear Lake as your backdrop. It’s definitely worth it.” The 5k and 10k courses begin in the Village, then ascend along the meandering forest trails to the south. The day also includes a kids’ race and EXPO event at noon, and an awards ceremony and raffle from 1:00 to 2:00, in the midst of exhibit booths, live music and product giveaways. And with an average of 200 participants plus spectators, it’s a fun festival atmosphere. If Mother Nature surprises us with some white stuff, snowshoe rentals and purchases are available at a number of local stores. Registration is now open at snowshoethebear.com or by phone at (909) 224-9315. [Photos courtesy...

If you can walk, you can “Snowshoe the Bear”

Big Bear Lake, CA, January 5, 2013 – The 5th annual Snowshoe the Bear event is scheduled for February 23, and with two race lengths starting in the Village, all skill levels are welcome. Snowshoeing requires no training – in fact, many participants are first-timers. The 5k/3.1-mile course is an easy loop around the slopes of Towne Trail, which rises just enough to offer great views of the valley. More serious athletes can race through the pristine single track trails on the 10k/6.2 mile course just above town.  There is also a free Kid’s Race. Most outdoor sport retailers sell or rent snowshoes, but participants should reserve snowshoes ahead of time as most shops will sell out for the event.  Check the website snowshoethebear.wordpress.com for locations. Snowshoe the Bear is one of five events produced in coordination with the 2013 Open Air Big Bear series, and is organized by Karen Lundgren, world-class adventure racer and the 13th woman to successfully climb the Seven Summits of the world.  Other events include Big Bear Memorial Day 5k (road run, May 26), PaddleFest (kayak, canoe, SUP, June 29), Tour de Big Bear (cycling, August 3) and Endure the Bear (trail run, September 6 and 7).  The Memorial Day 5k is a new addition this year, and Endure the Bear has added a 100 mile trail run.  Athletes who participate in certain multiple events will...
