Interact Club hosts Cinco de Mayo party for Seniors

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 14, 2013 – The local Interact Club will sponsor its 11th annual Cinco de Mayo party for seniors on Saturday, May 4th at 2 P.M. at the Big Bear Valley Senior Center. Bear Valley residents aged 55 and up are welcome to attend this free event, which will feature catering by Hacienda Restaurant, door prizes, and music ranging from the Big Band era to contemporary. The Big Bear Interact Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake and comprises about 80 high school students as members.  The Club meets twice each month and raises all of its own funds (approximately $12,000 each year). Every year, the Club donates funds to local charities, scholarship funds and international service projects.  The party for Seniors is a club favorite, as it gives the members of the Interact Club the opportunity to meet with and engage older members of the community and to thank them for all of their contributions to the Big Bear...

Rotary Club Honors Scholarship Winners

Big Bear, CA, May 4, 2012, 1:00pm – The Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake has announced the names of the winners of their 2012 Rotary Scholarship Program.  This year the Club is awarding a total of $7500 in five separate scholarships of $1500 each.  The Rotary Scholarship winners include Lindsay Hafen, Jackson Rees and Alyssa Larson for academic scholarships, Carly Jo Reeves for the Bob Wood Memorial Scholarship in Communications and Journalism and Dru Chilcoat for the John Voss Memorial Scholarship used towards Vocational School.  The students will be introduced at the annual Rotary Eagle of Excellence Community Service Awards and Dinner this Sunday evening, May 6th.  The deserving students receiving these scholarships are recognized for their academic achievement, student government, sports, clubs, fine arts, outside work and for their community service during their high school careers.  Thirty-three applicants applied this year from a class of 176 students.  Applications were reviewed by a committee of Rotary members who then made the selections in each category.  Committee Chair Dave Caretto stated “there were many qualified and deserving students; we only wish we had more funds to distribute.  The quality of our high school students is outstanding, and this is a tribute not only to the students themselves but also to their parents, their teachers and their school.”   Additionally, the Rotary Club sponsors scholarships through the Mihaylo Foundation and the...

Rotary Interact Club Prepares Care Packages For Troops

Big Bear, Ca, May 11, 2011, 3:00pm – The Rotary Interact Club at Big Bear High School is preparing care packages for troops who are serving overseas.  The club is collecting items through Memorial Day weekend to prepare these packages as a way of honoring and memorializing our fallen troops.  According to the Rotary Club, cash donations to buy items and offset postage are welcome, and anyone wishing to donate items may drop them off at the following three locations in the valley: Riffenburgh Lumber, Stone and Youngberg, and the Paper Clip.  The Rotary Club asks that you please bring any food or personal hygiene items in their original packaging.  Each of the drop-off locations will gladly accept any quantity of items you may wish to donate.  All of the items will be packaged for individual troops or groups of troops stationed overseas.  The Interact Club members will assemble them after the Memorial Day weekend.  The Big Bear Interact Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake and currently includes approximately 50 members who are students at Big Bear High School.  The club meets twice each month and raises all of it own funds which is approximately $10,500 each year.
