Motorcycle Accident Big Bear City

Big Bear City, CA July 6, 2012 4:00 pm – Today around 1:00 pm a motorcycle traveling eastbound on North Shore Drive was involved in an accident with a white pickup truck traveling west.  The vehicles came to rest where near Greenway Drive on Highway 38.  The California Highway Patrol, Big Bear Sheriffs and local fire authorities responded to the accident scene.  The highway was briefly closed diverting traffic to side streets.   Big Bear Paramedics administrated emergency first aid to the Motorcycle driver who was transported for further medical assistance.  An investigation into this accident was underway, at this time local authorities do not have a cause for the...

UPDATE: Motorcycle Fatality Identified as Cheryl Hightower

Big Bear, CA, August 31, 2011, 7:00pm – The victim of this morning’s fatal motorcycle accident at Greenway and North Shore Drive in Big Bear City has been identified as Cheryl Hightower, 65, of Hesperia.  Ms. Hightower had been a long time employee of the Snow Summit Corporation and was phasing out her employment for retirement.  Additionally, the driver of the Jeep Cherokee, who was also involved in the accident, has been identified as Walter Campbell, 60, of Big Bear City.  Mr. Campbell was uninjured.  According to CHP, Ms. Hightower was riding on a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling westbound on North Shore Drive when she was struck by Mr. Campbell’s Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound on Greenway impacting the left side of the motorcycle and ejecting it’s rider.  She was pronounced deceased at the scene by Big Bear City Fire personnel at approximately 7:45am.  The accident caused the intersection at Greenway and North Shore Drive to be closed for 2 to 3 hours with a detour set in place for traffic to avoid the scene of the collision.  The cause of the accident is still under...

Gear Up For Motorcycle Safety Month

Big Bear, CA, May 3, 2011, noon – Gas prices and temperatures are climbing, and more motorcyclists are riding the roads.  The California Highway Patrol is reminding drivers and riders to safely share the road.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says approximately 80% of reported motorcycle crashes result in injury or death, while the figure for cars is about 20%.  Robert Gladden of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation says, “In addition to wearing the proper safety gear, especially a helmet that is certified….to meet Department of Transportation specifications, riders are encouraged to enroll in a training course.”  The California  Motorcyclist Safety Program offers basic rider courses in Hesperia and Colton, as well as other locations in the Inland Empire.  Registration is available by calling 877-RIDE-411 or online at ca-msp.org.  CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow says, “All motorists are reminded to be extra alert when on the road to help keep everyone safe.”  During May’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Cal Trans will be displaying this message on highway signs:  Share the Road, Look Twice for Motorcyclists. Update – Fatal Motorcycle Accident

Big Bear, Ca February 14, 2011 12:00 pm – The following is an update to the report about Friday’s motorcycle accident.  According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 6:00 pm on February 11.  36-year-old Gabriel Pomona was traveling within the speed limit, eastbound on North Shore Drive, when he swerved to avoid a pickup truck turning left on to Tinkerbell Avenue.  Pomona lost his balance and was ejected from the motorcycle.  He and the motorcycle collided with the truck.  He was transported to Bear Valley Community Hospital, where he passed away from his injuries.  The driver and the passenger in the pickup truck were not injured.  No arrests were made and alcohol was ruled out as a cause of the accident.
