From Wildlife Habitat to the Big Bear Alpine Zoo

Big Bear, CA, March 29, 2014 – In 1959 a forest fire engulfed the San Bernardino National Forest and in the aftermath, several injured animals were found that required care. A makeshift hospital and rehabilitation area called the Wildlife Habitat was set up where the zoo is currently located. Two bobcats and an orphaned baby black bear were the first residents of the future zoo. In 1961, plans for the new Moonridge Zoo were drawn, the first zoo supervisor was hired, and the first enclosures were built. Also that same year, Herman the black bear, one of the zoo’s most famous residents, was rescued during a forest fire at Barton Flats. During the 60s many upgrades were made to the zoo including landscaping, a pond, restrooms, and a new bear den for Herman. Many more animals arrived and the eagle aviary was completed in 1967. Attendance increased from a few hundred over Memorial Day weekend in the mid 60s to over 3000 in the early 70s during that same period. The 70s and 80s saw many more facility improvements and the addition of dozens more animals including bears, coyotes, wolves, peacocks, turkeys, and mountain lions. Boo In The Zoo

Big Bear Lake, CA, October 18, 2012, 6am – This Halloween parents are invited to bring their children all dressed for Halloween fun to enjoy a thrilling ghost and goblin adventure. Boo in the Zoo is from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, October 27 at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. There will be costume contests for the children, arts and crafts projects, and children’s games. Kids can go on a scavenger hunt and win free bowling games at the Bowling Barn. At 11am and 2pm there will be Halloween treats for the animals, and the 3pm feeding tour will have special Halloween treats for the animals. And like years before, children can get lots of treats throughout the park from gracious business participants and docent goblins all decked out for chills and thrills. Blues For The Zoo Brings Music To The Mountains

Big Bear Lake, CA, July 25, 2012, 3:00pm – Blues For The Zoo, a fundraiser for the Big Bear Lake Moonridge Animal Park is set for Saturday, August 4 at the Swim Beach Outdoor Amphitheater. The afternoon of music from 3 to 7:30pm will feature C.J. Chenier, Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers, and Alvin Youngblood Hart. The gates open at 1pm and outdoor chairs and blankets are welcome for festival-style lawn seating. The lakeside setting provides a scenic backdrop for an afternoon of internationally recognized musicians, local artisan booths and a freshly prepared food and beverage menu. Tickets are $30 in advance / $35 on the day of the show. Children 10 and under are admitted free of charge. Parking is $4.00. Boo In The Zoo: Bring A Pumpkin For A Bear!

Big Bear, Ca, October 27, 2011, 12:00pm – This weekend children of all ages can go trick or treating at the Moonridge Animal Park.  The 10th annual “Boo in the Zoo” will take place on Saturday, October 29th from 1:00 to 5:00pm.  Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in costume, and take part in the costume parade and contest.  The event has been expanded this year in preparation for the new zoo’s opening, in which members of friends of the Moonridge Zoo state they would like to break ground for the new site this coming spring of 2012.  There will also be a pumpkin carving contest, and Miss Big Bear and her court will be on hand to do crafts with the little ones.  Normal zoo rates apply, however if you bring a pumpkin for the animals you will receive $1 off your admission.  Pumpkins for the animals are a very special treat, and greatly appreciated.  For more information call (909) 584-1299. Moonridge Animal Park Hosts Wolf Awareness Day

Big Bear, Ca, October 14, 2011, 12:00pm – Tomorrow is Wolf Awareness Day at the Moonridge Animal Park.  The Zoo volunteers and staff will dispel myths about wolves and inform attendees of their importance within the circle of life.  There will be arts and crafts activities for children, giving them the chance to make a hand puppet or a wolf mask.  At noon, Red Riding Hood will come and read a story to the children, and she will be accompanied by real wolves.  There will also be a 2:00pm feeding tour of the animals in the park.  The zoo opens at 10:00am, and will close at 5:00pm, and normal entry rates apply.
