Ghosts in the Bear…

Big Bear, CA,  February 8, 2014 – Perhaps you’ve seen movement out of the corner of your eye from time to time, or the flash of a misty figure on a dark night. Or maybe you’ve found your dog staring at something you couldn’t see. If you’ve had one of these experiences, you may have met one of the many ghosts that are said to inhabit Big Bear right along with us. Our most famous ghost is undoubtedly George, the accountant at the Captain’s Anchorage, who died long ago under mysterious circumstances. Long time employees tell stories of their clothing being tugged on, whispering in their ears, bottles falling off shelves, and music playing when no one is there. There’s a woman in Sugarloaf who claims that a group of Serrano Indian spirits walk through her kitchen on a regular basis. And of course there is the story of the Indian maiden who threw herself off Castle Rock when her warrior prince didn’t return from battle. Hikers and rock climbers have reported seeing what are thought to be echoes of the moment she fell. Some of the other spooky spots in Big Bear where you might have your own encounter include the Miss Liberty Tour Boat and the Big Bear Mountain Brewery. Miss Liberty is docked near the spot where two children are thought to have died...

Big Bear Horror Film Festival Offers Outdoor Midnight Screening Of Sleepaway Camp

Big Bear Lake, CA, September 30, 2011, noon – If you’re idea of fun is watching a scary movie in the dark woods, outside, where anything can happen, then you don’t want to miss the Saturday night outdoor screening of Sleepaway Camp (1983) at this weekend’s Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival®. Founded in 2009, the festival is held annually to recognize excellence in horror and science fiction films. The presentation of Sleepaway Camp concludes a day of Festival screenings and workshops at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center, and follows the 10 pm “Haunted Cruise” on Big Bear Lake aboard the Miss Liberty. Sleepaway Camp has become a cult classic since its release 28 years ago. It tells the story of slightly disturbed and painfully shy Angela Baker, who is sent away to summer camp with her cousin. Not long after her arrival, things start to go horribly wrong. The film stars then 13-year-old Felissa Rose as Angela. Felissa is currently in production on Sleepaway Camp Reunion. She’s a judge at the Festival this year, and will be on hand to sign autographs and greet fans. An added attraction to the Festival, the Sleepaway Camp screening is $5 and can be paid onsite at the Festival. The event is included for “All Access” pass holders. Tickets are still available for the Festival. Visit...
