Bounty Offered for Drone Operators

San Bernardino County, CA, August 5, 2015 – Drone operators have been asked repeatedly not to fly their aircraft during wildfires. But at crucial moments in each of the wildfires that have broken out in San Bernardino County so far this year, fire-fighting air tankers had to be diverted away from their targets because of the presence of small airborne hobby drones. The County Board of Supervisors decided asking is no longer enough and created a $75,000 reward fund for the arrest and conviction of anyone who flew any remote control-operated aircraft and interfered with fire-fighting aircraft during the recent Lake, Mill 2, and North fires. “Because fire-fighting planes could not be used, those fires spread faster and further,” Board of Supervisors Chairman James Ramos said during a news conference. “In the most recent fire, the North Fire, we saw cars and trucks burning on the freeway, we saw homes burn, and we saw families running for their lives,” Chairman Ramos said. “We want to know who was flying drones, and we want them punished. Someone knows who they are, and there is $75,000 waiting for them.” Sheriff John McMahon said his department will actively pursue drone operators in addition to its other vital duties during wildfires. Highway 38 Fully Opened and Crews Continue to Improve Mill Fire Line

Yucaipa, CA, June 29, 2013 – As of 8am this morning, Highway 38 completely re-opened eliminating the need for the detour through Oak Glen put into place last night as a result of the Mill Fire.  CAL Fire was assigned to the Mill Fire and crews continue to battle the blaze which has remained at 350 acres overnight and is at 20% containment as of this morning.  The Mill Fire began yesterday at 2:09pm off of Highway 38 near the Mill Creek Ranger Station near Mentone.  Evacuations were put into place but have all been lifted.  One home was partially damaged.  The cause of the fire is under...

Yucaipa, CA, June 28, 2013 – Cal Fire, the agency assigned to the Mill Fire, is reporting the fire to be remaining at 200 plus acres with no containment.  An evacuation was ordered earlier this afternoon for north of Carter and west of Bryant in the areas of Mentone and Yucaipa.  One house was partially damaged due to the fire.  Highway 38 has re-opened in both directions with a detour at Bryant off of Highway 38 at the Mill Creek Ranger Station through Oak Glen.  The Mill Fire was reported just after 2pm this afternoon and is no threat to the Big Bear...

Highway 38 Closed But Campgrounds Remain Open in Angeles Oakes

Mentone, CA, June 28, 2013 – According to the CHP, Highway 38 is closed in both directions due to the Mill Fire.  The downbound traffic closure begins at Lake Williams with the exception of campers heading to Angeles Oakes and Seven Oakes campgrounds, which remain open.  The campgrounds are only accessible from Big Bear.  Highway 38 is closed in Mentone to upbound traffic due to this fire.  The Mill Fire was reported at 2:09pm this afternoon and is currently at just over 200 acres burning south of the Mill Creek Ranger Station.  Some structures have been lost and evacuations are in effect there.  We are told the Mill Fire is no threat to Big Bear but smoke is visible in the...
