Big Bear, CA, May 18, 2015 – On Sunday evening, the Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley’s 2015 Man About Town Campaign came to an end with a Western Ho-Down at Northwood’s Resort. This years theme was “Charging Forward for Women’s Health” and for the last six weeks, Mike Kostiuk, Rob Robbins, and Craig Brewster have been holding events to raise money to support local women’s health programs including Soroptimist’s annual mammogram program. The skits performed at the finale were especially funny this year with the men on Mike Kostiuk’s team dancing around in cowboy boots and nighties. Truly a sight that won’t soon be forgotten. All three candidates together raised a total of $57,002. with Craig Brewster of Nottingham’s Restaurant raising the most money and thus was crowned this year’s ‘Man About...

SIBBV Announces 2015 “Man About Town” Candidates

Big Bear Lake, CA March 27, 2015 – On Thursday, Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley held their annual “Man About Town” kick off campaign to announce this year’s three contestants.  This year’s theme is “Charging Forward for Woman’s Health”.  Man About Town is the organization’s biggest fundraiser with the goal this year to raise money to support local women’s health programs including a women’s health symposium and their annual mammogram program at the hospital held in partnership with the Hospital Foundation.  This year’s candidates include Craig Brewster, Mike Kostiuk, and Rob Robbins.  Craig Brewster is co-owner and operator of his family’s business, Nottingham’s Restaurant and the Robinhood Resort, Mike Kostiuk is owner and operator of Murray’s Saloon and Rob Robbins sits on the Board of Directors of the hospital for the Bear Valley Community Healthcare District.  This year, each of the three candidates are limited to two fundraising events.  Each dollar raised accounts for one vote for the candidate.  The contestant who raises the most money will be crowned Man About Town 2015 at the May 17th...

David Leach Honored by Arts Council

Big Bear Lake, CA, June 25, 2014 – David Leach got special recognition and a lot of laughs at The Arts Council’s annual meeting this month. The board of directors thanked him for his 14 years of work on behalf of The Council, shared stories about his many accomplishments, and presented him with a plaque. Holding the plaque up to the audience he said, “You know where this is going: right up on the wall at my Barnstorm office!” Dave can often be seen in the company of friends in his favorite booth at the Barnstorm Restaurant at the airport. Dave’s long tenure included eight years as president, a position from which he just recently retired. He was known as the cheerful “front man” at nearly every Council event, and played major roles in upgrading equipment at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center and establishing an art gallery in the Village. Now, he says he hopes to “contribute in less official ways.” Dave is well known for his activities outside the Arts Council too. As a past “Man About Town” and a frequent participant in other charitable causes. Jim Miller crowned Man About Town

Big Bear Lake, CA – 5/19/2014 – The annual fund raiser Man About Town raised a over $61,000 for Soroptimists International and women’s health issues in the Big Bear Valley.   Sunday night three contestants–Michael Natzic, Ray Hino and Jim Miller–made the final push for this years  Man About Town title.   With supporters, friends and family in attendance, the hats were passed, skits performed and money tallied ending this year’s six week frenzy of fund raising events.  A total of $61,024 was raised, not besting past years, but still an impressive total as new rules limited candidates to two events each.  With the tally finished, Jim Miller, Rotary President and City Department head, received the traditional cane and top hat signifying his victory.   “It’s all in good fun, which exploits the male ego desire to win in an effort raise money for good causes”, said last year’s Man About Town winner, Fire Chief Jeff...

Men Competing to Raise Money for Women’s Health

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 10, 2014 – This year’s Man About Town fundraiser will benefit local women’s health programs, and Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley has named the campaign “Healthy Women Make Healthy Families.” Under that umbrella are proactive practices for physical health–such as getting regular mammograms and following a lifestyle to prevent diabetes–and also mental health, which includes knowing how to avoid an abusive relationship, and how to seek help for depression. There are also programs to support financial health, like money management education and career counseling. The candidates are Ray Hino, Jim Miller and Michael Natzic, and they have a busy few weeks ahead of them raising money for the campaign. Each dollar equals one vote, and the man with the most dollars will be crowned Man About Town 2014 at the May 18 finale event at Northwoods Resort.
