Big Bear, CA, May 12, 2015 – At Monday’s Special Board meeting of the Bear Valley Unified School District, Superintendent Kurt Madden gave his resignation to the Board effective July 1st.  Mr. Madden has accepted a position in the Bonita Unified School District as Superintendent.  Chairman, Bev Grabe, expressed that the Board sadly accepted his resignation.  Kegham Tashjian and Dick Bray, advisors from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of School’s office, lead the discussion to explain the process of finding a replacement for Mr. Madden using County services that are offered to BVUSD at no charge.  Mr. Tashjian outlined a proposed process and timeline for the Superintendent job search.   The search process is lengthy and includes meetings with Board members, representatives of classified, certificated and management staff as well as community member focus groups to  determine the requirements and qualifications of what is needed in our District for our future Superintendent.  The ultimate decision making powers are held by the Board members.  Mr. Tashjian went on to explain that the time frame of finding a permanent Superintendent is too short and the Board will need to consider an Interim Superintendent.  Mr. Tashjian has served our District as Interim Superintendent in the past but is currently unavailable. Fireside Chat… with Strings Attached

Big Bear, CA, February 18, 2014 – Four years ago, due to budget cuts, BVUSD had to cut funding for the Elementary Strings Program which provides free participation for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students interested in learning to play in an orchestra. Due to the state altering their education funding formula this year, there is a possibility that the District will fund the program again, provided there is enough community support. Superintendent of schools, Kurt Madden, is having a ‘Fireside Chat’ to gauge that support on Wednesday February 26th, from 6:00 – 7:30pm in the Knickerbocker Mansion Conference Room. The community has rallied around this program, raising the $30,000. per year necessary to keep it alive for the past 4 years. The result of regaining funding will free up the group to fund other projects such as merit scholarships and instrument rentals for needy kids and educational field trips to see world renowned artists. This is an opportunity for more children to be exposed to music and to continue support for the 150 students already enrolled in the program. This will be the only meeting for the purpose of re-funding the...
