1st Goldsmith’s Race Results

Big Bear, Ca, December 20, 2011, 8:00am – The first Goldsmith’s Ski race of the season took place this past Sunday, and despite cold weather conditions and low visibility, many local children and even a few adults braved the temperatures and participated in the slalom race.  The harsh conditions made for an icy course, resulting in quite a few racers skiing off course, or not finishing.  Stand out performances of the day went to John Micheal Fabrizi with the fastest combined time of the day with one minute and 19 seconds for both runs, Nationally ranked Stephanie Lebby, who with total combined time of one minute and twenty three seconds was the fastest lady of the day, and was only beat by three boys.  In the Masters division Susan Kendall laid down the fastest masters time for both men and women with a time of one minute and 33 seconds. Forty Six year old Kendall raced in the collegiate league in her twenties, and has proven that she still remembers her college race training.  Other winners for the race team and masters in their respective categories include:  Johann Auer, Emerson Warren, Sean Murphy, Elle Williams, Alec Burton, Kelly Kai Tokunaga, Delany Warren, McKinley Warren, John Boucher, Alex Baroian, and Marcelle Howard- Goodsell.  Winners in the Dteam categories include: Ryan Dosa, Callie Brzenzski, Devon Garber, Haley Hoskins, Jonas Simko, Annaliese...

Kurt Madden Places 3rd in 100 Mile Endurance Challenge

Big Bear, Ca, October 24, 2011, 3:00pm –  Big Bear Valley School District Superintendent, Kurt Madden, set a great example for the students of the valley this past weekend when he ran 100 miles in under 24 hours.  The event was called the 100 Mile Endurance Challenge, and all of the athletes running in it were raising funds for kids and the 100 Mile Club.  The 100 Mile Club is a non profit organization that works to stop childhood obesity by encouraging students to run 100 miles within one school year.  Madden ran for the Big Bear Valley, and in particularly he ran for students at Baldwin Lane Elementary, to help them gain access to the track behind the school.  Madden was lucky to have a top notch crew for the race.  Ted Devito, Cathleen Calkins and Susan Maya saw Kurt through the entire race, with Ted sometimes running alongside Kurt, and Susan and Cathleen pacing him on the bicycle.  Kurt ended up running for 22 hours and 30 minutes, and finished third overall in the race.   Cash donations and/or checks can be made out to “Bear Valley Unified School District” and sent to the following address: Kurt Madden, Superintendent Attention: Baldwin Lane Elementary School 100 Mile Club Bear Valley Unified School District P.O. Mom & Dad Project Invites You to Read “Llama LLama Red Pajama”

Big Bear, Ca, October 4th, 2011, 4:00pm – The Mom & Dad Project in Big Bear City are taking part in Jumpstarts Read for the Record this Thursday, October 6th.  The local non-profit will join with more than 2 million people to call for an end to America’s early education achievement gap by reading the children’s book Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney.  The Mom & Dad Project invites parents and kids age 0 to 5 years old to come in their pajamas and visit a real life llama on Thursday from 10:00am to 12:00pm.  Each child will be able to do a craft, and receive a free children’s book.  The organization asks that you call to sign up, to ensure that they have enough books for the kids.  The Mom & Dad Project is a non profit organization that provides  classes and services to parents in the Big Bear Valley, including child birth classes.  For more information or to sign up for Thursday’s event call 585-5607 or go online at...

Chili Cookoff Hottest Event this Weekend

Big Bear’s chili cookoff this Saturday is set to be the spiciest event of the weekend.  Over 40 chili cooks are coming to Big Bear to compete with local cookers in this International Chili Society sanctioned cook-off, each hoping to be the winner and go on to the all-California competition.  Four categories will be judged: red chili, green chili, salsa, and people’s choice.  Last year’s winners are returning to defend their titles and hoping to take home some of the over $1,700 in cash prizes.  The public is invited to attend with free admission and a chance to judge the people’s choice entries.  In addition to the chili competition, the event includes more than 60 vendors, a beer garden, live entertainment, and a kid’s Fun Zone with bounce houses, a climbing wall, pony rides, face painting and much more.  The gates open at 10:00 am with the awards ceremony set for 4:30 pm for a full day of hot and saucy fun.  The event will be in the Bartlett parking lot behind the Big Bear Visitor Center, at 630 Bartlett Road, Big Bear Lake, CA.
