Special Olympics Athletes Benefit from a Jump in the Lake

  Big Bear Lake, CA, March 11, 2014 – Nearly 500 people took a quick dip in the lake Saturday to benefit Special Olympics athletes in the third annual Big Bear Lake Polar Plunge. The goal for Plunge organizers was to raise at least $50,000. and it looks like they will more than double that. 44 teams and numerous individuals ran into the 45 degree water for a great cause. 10 athletes here in Big Bear and others from the Inland Empire will benefit directly from this event. They will receive help to pay for training, transportation and lodging, allowing them to participate in events such as bowling, and track and field competitions. The teams were quite creative, as usual. There were the Big Bear Copsicles, the Kiwanis Ice Cube (it would have been Cubes, but one cube was sick), the MWD Freezer Pops, Team Keller Williams wore tutus, a SWAT team and the Fire Department in full gear took the plunge, and of course the Big Bear Special Olympic Athlete Superheroes. 86 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the Special...

Teenager Profits From Public Speaking

Big Bear Lake, CA March 6, 2014 – Big Bear High School student Elizabeth Johnson took home the $200 prize for 1st place at the annual Speech Trek contest for high school students. Her five-minute speech addressed the topic of “Women at the Top…Why Not?” Judges will now view performance DVDs of first place winners from throughout the state and send the top three to compete at the state competition this spring. There, the public speakers will compete for even bigger cash awards. Multiple local businesses supported the local contest, which was sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) produced in collaboration with Bearly Speaking Toastmasters. Beau Revac won Second Place and $150, Arturo Atilano placed Third taking home $100, and Madison Waner took Fourth Place and $50–all at Keller Williams Realty in Big Bear Lake. High school speakers compete on important topics

Big Bear Lake, CA, February 25, 2013 – The Big Bear Branch of the American Association of University Women is partnering with Bearly Speaking Toastmasters to present the second annual Eleanor Stem Allen Memorial Speech Contest. This year’s topic is “Sexual Harassment in Schools…big deal?” and is open to all high school students. The speakers compete for cash prizes, and the contest –also known as Speech Trek – has served as a stepping stone for past students. The winner of last year’s inaugural contest, Elizabeth Johnson, went on to capture 5th place at the State level. Her presentation on “Bullying” earned an additional cash prize for her and statewide recognition to the Big Bear Valley.
