School District Board Continues to Discuss Big Bear Middle School’s Principal Position

Big Bear, CA, May 25, 2011, 2:00pm – At the last regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Bear Valley Unified School District which was held at Big Bear High School, the Board allowed for public comment prior to the closed session meeting to discuss and consider public requests for the reinstatement of Big Bear Middle School Principal, Julie Chamberlin.  Ms. Chamberlin was informed last March that she would be relieved of her current position as Principal and would be returning to the classroom for the upcoming school year.  Approximately 17 people, consisting of friends and family members of Ms. Chamberlain, as well as BBMS staff, attended the May 18th meeting with several members of the public reading letters that were submitted to the Board on Ms. Chamberlin’s behalf.  One suggestion that was made in a letter was to reinstate Ms. Chamberlin on a mentor program whereas she could receive guidance and direction with a scheduled evaluation of her performance the following year.  The BVUSD Board retired to closed session for further discussion.  In the meantime, a celebratory cake and presentation was given to all present, including the High School Associated Student Body members, in congratulating Big Bear High School Principal, Mike Ghelber, for being awarded the honor of California Distinguished School for 2011.  Upon returning at 6:30pm, the start of their regular open session meeting,...

Community Members Address the BVUSD Board at Wednesday’s Meeting

Big Bear Valley, CA, April 21, 2010, 5:00pm – At the April 20th Bear Valley Unified School District’s Board of Trustees regular meeting, it was standing room only and beyond as teachers, parents and students arrived to address the board in regards to the demotion of Big Bear Middle School Principal, Julie Chamberlin.  As close to 100 members of the community filed into the small meeting room at the District Office, Kegham Tashjian, the Interim Superintendent, had to request that half the room wait outside due to fire codes but assured the public that everyone who wished to address the board would have the opportunity.  A total of 22 parents, students and teachers spoke out on behalf of Mrs. Chamberlin, who was notified in early March that she would be relieved of her responsibilities as Middle School Principal and would be returning to the classroom as of the start of the 2011-2012 school year.  As this is a personnel issue, the reason for her demotion has not been made public nor has Mrs. Charmberlin herself been given a reason why.  Although the total time allocated for public comment on any one item cannot exceed 20 minutes, the board unanimously approved to allow extra time for anyone who wished to speak on Mrs. Chamberlin’s behalf.  All of the speakers praised Mrs. Chamberlin’s accomplishments as Middle School Principal and many requested...
