Big Bear, Ca, July 5, 2011, 8:00am - Team Jordan, comprised of 14-year-old Jordan Romero, his father Paul and step mom Karen Lundgren, recently started their B.I.G Tour, which stands for Butt In Gear. The team who has been climbing the highest peaks in the world since Jordan was 10 years old, and who summitted Mount Everest last spring, kicked off their 50 states tour, in which they will climb the highest peaks in all of the 50 states. The Butt In Gear Tour as they call it is supposed to encourage kids, and adults to get off the couch and get outside and climb, paddle, bike, run, or anything that involves being active! The team traveled to the east coast where they checked off the highest peaks in Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The team has already climbed the highest peaks in California, Arizona, Washington, and Denali in Alaska, which is also one of the peaks the team climbed in the quest for the seven summits. After visiting the east coast, the team traveled to Winterpark, Colorado for the No Barriers Summit. No Barriers is an organization that promotes innovative ideas, approaches, and assistive technologies, which help people with disabilities push through their own personal barriers to live full and active lives. Karen, Paul and Jordan went on a hike with summit attendees, some of which were blind, were amputees, or had other physical or neurological disorders. Paul commented that he was amazed with the people who participated. He was especially impressed and humbled by 25 year old Kyle Maynard, who from birth has been a quad amputee. Maynard is currently training to climb Mount Kilamanjaro on his own, and is doing so with “no barriers.” Team Jordan told KBHR that No Barriers “is an organization that offers hope to people who have disabilities, it brings together with solutions with people who need assistance,” said Karen Lundgren. “People get the opportunity to do sports, who never thought they could.” For more information of Team Jordan’s next move in their 50 states tour go to JordanRomero.com.

He hopes to inspire others to find their personal Everest, to challenge themselves to reach new heights. The Seven Summits of Big Bear is Southern California’s equivalent. The group hikes begin with lowest of the seven, Gray’s Peak at 7,920’ near the west end of the lake, next Saturday. The series finishes up with an all-day expedition to reach the top of San Gorgonio, the highest peak in Southern California at 11, 502’. “The Seven Summits of Big Bear gives participants an opportunity to set attainable fitness goals, and they get to see some of the most remarkable panoramic views ever!” says Heather Devito, lead guide and owner of Mountain Fitness Center. Eighth Grader Jordan Romero Says of His Mt. Everest Adventure: “My Favorite Moment Was Coming Back Here”

Following the June 9 Live Your Dreams Fair at BBMS, there was a community dinner. Jordan's BBMS cross-country coach Tracy Tokunaga coordinated the event which included donations of food from local restaurants and the Seven Summits cakes (pictured) baked by Sugar Pine Bakery. Dinner generated $2,585 which, coupled with a $10,000 donation from Stater Bros., will allow for the continuation of BBMS Homework Club.
Big Bear Lake, CA — Last week we shared with you the highlights of the ceremony celebrating Team Jordan Romero, upon their return from a record-breaking climb to the peak of Mt. Everest; among proclamations honoring 13-year-old Jordan Romero was a message from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger saying, “Your perseverance is the hallmark of a true champion.” But, as Jordan shared with countless Big Bear Middle School classmates and friends at the subsequent slideshow on June 9, featuring the climb he shared with dad Paul Romero and Karen Lundgren, “It was the best feeling anyone could ever imagine—I could care less about the record, but being up there as a family…” That, he recalls, was the best part of the entire, grueling expedition—with one special exception. As Jordan told the crowd during the Q&A following the slide show (which included video of intense winds, snow-covered tents above the clouds, and amazing vistas from the snow-capped peak at over 29,000’), “My favorite moment was coming back here [to Big Bear], just arriving to the dam after Arctic Circle—and the hardest part was leaving.” Jordan, Paul and Karen shared other moments from their trip but, as the youngest in the Team Jordan Romero trio relayed, “To tell you the truth, our story was a bit boring. It was real smooth. It was harder climbing down [Everest]. We were just tired, we were like zombies, and it’s harder on your body to go down hill.” Next on the world-class mountaineer’s agenda is this afternoon’s eighth grade promotion ceremony from BBMS and a trip to Brazil next week (for a race with Paul and Karen); but then, he plans to summit the tallest peaks within each of the 50 states (though he already did Alaska’s Mt. Denali at age 11) and the climb of the last of his Seven Summits of the world, Antarctica’s Mt. Vinson. (For more information on Team Jordan Romero and their Everest summit on May 22, click on the Related Links “Jordan Romero” tab below.)

The Team Jordan Romero trio--Karen, Paul and Jordan--were gifted with commemorative jerseys from the Amgen Tour of California, which cycled through Big Bear at the same time the trio was making their final ascent to the peak of Mt. Everest. The Event Resource Office's Rick Bates explained that the red jerseys are "King of the Mountain" jerseys, while the blue one is for "Most Courageous." (As it turns out, Karen did double-duty on the climb, chronicling the event on film and video.)

After the event, Jordan took time to take photos with old friends and new fans. Of his first day back to school on Monday, June 7, BBMS Principal Julie Chamberlin relayed, "Jordan was like a celebrity on campus--not just with the kids, but with the adults. But, by lunch, he was one of the gang."
