Local Suspect Identified and Booked on Felony Charges of Starting a Fire

Big Bear Lake, CA, June 22, 2016 – Shortly before noon today, deputies of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a fire in the 200 block of North Starvation Flats Road in Big Bear Lake. Witnesses reported that the fire started immediately after two subjects left the area in a vehicle. Deputies conducted an area check and located the vehicle and subjects matching the description that was provided by witnesses. Human Remains Found in Debris of Residential Fire

Big Bear Lake, CA, March 11, 2015 -At approximately 9:36 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10th, deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to a fire in the area of Dream Street and Waynoka Lane in Big Bear Lake.  Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from the Big Bear Fire Department responded and observed a residence fully engulfed in flames.  Firefighters extinguished the flames; however, the residence had partially collapsed and was completely destroyed.  The neighboring properties suffered minor to moderate damage.  The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Bomb/Arson Division responded to the location last night to conduct their investigation.  After assessing the scene, it was determined that the structure was too dangerous for investigators to enter the property.  Upon stabilizing the structure this morning with special equipment in order for the investigation to continue, the remains of a deceased male were found in the debris.  The victim’s identification and cause of death will be determined and released by the Coroner’s Office.  Investigation into this matter is ongoing.  Anyone having further information in this case is requested to contact the Detective Bureau of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station at (909) 866-0100.  Information can also be reported anonymously by calling WE-TIP at (800) 78- CRIME or online at www.wetip.com....

Major Structure Fire At Riffenburgh Lumber Yard

Big Bear Lake, CA September 29, 2013 9:00 am – A major structure fire was reported Sunday morning around 7:00 am burning at the Riffenburgh Lumber property.  Two structures near the rear of the property on the north end were fully engulfed in flames as the Big Bear Fire department arrived.  Both structures could be considered a total loss.  Other structures on the property were not affected including the main retail store building in the front, south end, of the property.  Smoke was seen from most parts of the valley and inundated several sections of big Bear City east of Division Drive and the Riffenburgh property.  Fire agencies from around the valley responded to this fire including a CSD backhoe as part of the mop up efforts. Fire Personnel Respond Quickly to Small Fire near Butler Peak

Big Bear, CA, July 25, 2013 – A small spot fire was reported just before 10am in the area of Butler Peak above Fawnskin.  The origin of the fire was originally reported as a possible downed aircraft but it has been confirmed that is not the case.  The fire is at about a quarter acre and appears to be a single tree lightening snag with heavy fuels in the area.  Two water dropping helicopters have responded to the fire and one hand crew.  The incident is being called the Grays...

Highway 38 Fully Opened and Crews Continue to Improve Mill Fire Line

Yucaipa, CA, June 29, 2013 – As of 8am this morning, Highway 38 completely re-opened eliminating the need for the detour through Oak Glen put into place last night as a result of the Mill Fire.  CAL Fire was assigned to the Mill Fire and crews continue to battle the blaze which has remained at 350 acres overnight and is at 20% containment as of this morning.  The Mill Fire began yesterday at 2:09pm off of Highway 38 near the Mill Creek Ranger Station near Mentone.  Evacuations were put into place but have all been lifted.  One home was partially damaged.  The cause of the fire is under...
