Open Air Big Bear Announces 2012 Conquer The Bear Schedule Of Events

Big Bear Lake, CA, November 11, 2011, noon – Open Air Big Bear is back with the 2012 Conquer the Bear, Conquer the Cub, and the all new Conquer the Grizzly multisport challenges in Big Bear Lake. The series will test athletes on four different disciplines throughout the year – snowshoeing, paddling, cycling, and trail running. The events include Snowshoe the Bear on February 25 – a snowshoe race of 5K for Conquer the Cub and 10K for Conquer the Bear and Conquer the Grizzly; Big Bear PaddleFest on July 8 – paddle races of 5K for Conquer the Cub and 20K for Conquer the Bear and Conquer the Grizzly; Tour de Big Bear on August 4 – NEW bike road races for Conquer the Cub, Conquer the Bear and Conquer the Grizzly; and Endure the Bear on September 9 – a trail run race of 5K for Conquer the Cub and 30K for Conquer the Bear and Conquer the Grizzly. The series offers athletes numerous chances at cash and prizes including $1000 grand prize split between the Conquer the Bear men’s and women’s overall winners, and the individual FRS King of the Mountain awards giving participants the opportunity to win $50 cash at each race. 13 Competitors Conquer the Bear, 21 Conquer the Cub

Big Bear, Ca, September 12, 2011, 8:00am – On Saturday, September 10th the Conquer the Bear series, part of Open Air Big Bear wrapped up with the Endure the Bear trail run.  The Conquer the Bear and Conquer the Cub series is a four event series that started this year in February with a snowshoe race, followed by a mountain bike race in June, Paddlefest in July, ending with the trail run in September.  Eighteen men and women competed in the Conquer the Cub series this year, which requires participants to take part in the shortest course of each challenge, with Janet Maxwell of Big Bear and Jimmy Johnson of Yucapia taking the top spots for the Conquer the Cub series.  The Conquer the Bear series required participants to compete in the long courses of each event, and Big Bear’s own athletic power couple Heather and Ted Devito took the top spots of the 13 competitors, with Heather taking the series win for the second time.  Heather and Ted both won $500 each for winning the entire series, and as Ted was on the podium accepting his check he yelled out to the crowd “Hey Mountain Fitness Members, this money is going to two new rowing machines at the gym,”  which was followed by the gym members cheers.  New this year was a king of the mountain competition, which gave $50 to...

Athletes Must “Endure The Bear” To “Conquer” It

Big Bear, Ca, September 5, 2011, 12:00pm – The final event in the Conquer the Bear series will take place this Saturday, September 10th.  The series which started in February this year with Snowshoe the Bear, has seen athletes through a technical mountain bike course, a lengthy around the lake paddle and now athletes must Endure the Bear with a 30k trail run.  The Conquer the Bear series has athletes competing in the longest or hardest course of each event.  Two years ago event organizers for Open Air Big Bear also added Conquer the Cub, which is for people who want to participate, but who may not be ready for Conquer the Bear.  Conquer the Cub participant’s race in the short course of each event.  This Saturday there will be four different options for participants, including a 5k, 15k, 30k and 50k trail run.  Participants will run through the hills of the south shore, along the ridgeline overlooking the Seven Oaks Valley, and down some exciting trails, starting and ending in the Village of Big Bear Lake.  According to race organizers Karen Lundgren and Paul Romero, registrations have nearly doubled so far from last year.  Romero told KBHR that he is “particularly excited about everything endurance in Big Bear.  I love seeing locals participate, and take up the sport of trail running.”  Romero went on to tell KBHR that...
