Reusing Recycling and Art at R&R Rant and Rave

Big Bear Lake, Ca May 14, 2011 12:00 pm – This weekend, Big Bear’s upscale vintage clothing and collectibles store, R&R Rant and Rave reopens in a new location, remade and renewed.  Last year, owner Sally Sherlock thought Rant and Rave would be a weekend summer-only store, open from May until November.  The idea grew out of Sally’s work helping people clear their homes of clutter.  Instead of throwing away good quality items, she opened the store and offered collectibles, jewelry, and almost new clothing for resale.  Broken and chipped nicknacks and dishes, Sally used in her pique assiett pieces, and she held classes in this mosaic art form at the store.  After a successful season, Sally was often asked when she would be opening again.  This spring she found a good location next to the Triangle Market on Moonridge Road and decided to open year-round, expanding the art classes.  This year classes include drawing and painting, art quilting, beaded jewelry, embroidery, and remade clothing.  R&R Rant and Rave is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays, 11 am to 7 pm, and Sundays 12 to 4. The store opens this weekend with a good supply of vintage jewelry, cast iron furniture, aloha shirts, light jackets, and flannel shirts.  “Not everything is vintage” says Sally, “but everything is very cute.” [audio:http://kbhr933.com/wp-content/uploads/SP30728.mp3|titles=R&R Rant and Rave...

Art Garden Growing Beautiful Stained Glass

Big Bear, Ca March 27, 2011 12:00 pm – On Big Bear Boulevard, the little round building at the corner of Wren Drive stands out.  Since last Fall, this has been the home of the Art Garden, a stained glass studio, shop, and classroom.  Owner Jeannine Dostrow has been a professional stained glass artist for 17 years and has lived in Big Bear since 2003.  When her studio was in Big Bear City, she concentrated on attending art shows and creating commissioned pieces for private homes and local businesses.  The new studio allows Jeannine to offer classes.  Any afternoon, visitors of any age are invited to drop in for a one to two hour workshop learning basic copper foil wrapping and soldering techniques with pre-cut glass.  Once hooked, a more in-depth class where students learn to cut the glass too is offered on Wednesday nights from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.  The Art Garden is also a great place to find beautiful gifts, hand-made jewelry, sun catchers for any window, tools and supplies for artists who don’t want to drive down the hill to get what they need.  Jeannine would like to share her love of stained glass with residents and visitors to the Big Bear Valley.  Drop in to the Art Garden any day from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.  The little round shop is located at 41529 Big Bear...
