Old Miners Chili Cook-Off In July

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 10, 2013 – This summer, Big Bear Lake will celebrate the 65th year of Old Miners Days events. The Old Miners Days Chili Cook-Off, sanctioned by the International Chili Society is coming up on Saturday, July 13. The fun includes more than 30 chili cooks, over 40 vendors, outhouse races, children’s area and live music, followed by bluegrass concert. The Chili event will take place from 10am to 6pm on July 13 at the Bartlett Lot in the Village of Big Bear Lake. Admission is free, and tasting kits are $5. Major Special Events Committee Looks to Solve Dilemmas and Decide Policy

Big Bear, Ca, January 11, 2012, 8:00am –The Major Special Events Ad-Hoc Committee will meet again tonight at 4:00pm in the Civic Center Training Room.  The committee will continue discussing major special event policy by going over the purpose of the committee, reviewing current policy framework, and will discuss dilemmas and how to address them.  Currently the Old Miners Association and the Big Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce have requested to hold events on the same date and at the same location.  The Old Miners want to hold their Chili Cook Off that has been around for years, and the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce, a business organization, wants to hold a BBQ fest both on the same date in July, and in the Bartlett Parking Lot.  According to City of Big Bear Lake Director of Intergovernmental/Community Relations Cheri Haggerty, dilemmas like this have happened before, and the committee will look to resolve the problem, and to develop a standard operating procedure for dealing with similar dilemmas in the future.  The committee will also discuss utilizing alternative venues for city events such as the Convention Center, Meadow Park, Rathbun Lot, Veterans and Rotary park.   The use of Bartlett Parking lot will also be on the discussion, and whether or not its use should be limited to once a month, and if it should be allowed for use at all...

Chili Cookoff Hottest Event this Weekend

Big Bear’s chili cookoff this Saturday is set to be the spiciest event of the weekend.  Over 40 chili cooks are coming to Big Bear to compete with local cookers in this International Chili Society sanctioned cook-off, each hoping to be the winner and go on to the all-California competition.  Four categories will be judged: red chili, green chili, salsa, and people’s choice.  Last year’s winners are returning to defend their titles and hoping to take home some of the over $1,700 in cash prizes.  The public is invited to attend with free admission and a chance to judge the people’s choice entries.  In addition to the chili competition, the event includes more than 60 vendors, a beer garden, live entertainment, and a kid’s Fun Zone with bounce houses, a climbing wall, pony rides, face painting and much more.  The gates open at 10:00 am with the awards ceremony set for 4:30 pm for a full day of hot and saucy fun.  The event will be in the Bartlett parking lot behind the Big Bear Visitor Center, at 630 Bartlett Road, Big Bear Lake, CA.
