One Step Closer For Skyline Trail: Public Input Sought

Big Bear, Ca, August 16, 2011, 12:00pm - The Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation is in the process of working with the Forest Service to get a new trail approved. The proposed trail known as Skyline would span from east to west along the south ridge of the Big Bear Valley, and would provide hikers, cyclists and equestrians with a safe alternative to fire roads such as 2n10 that has heavy vehicle traffic. This Saturday, there will be a public meeting at the intersection of fire roads 2N10 and 2N06, located south of Snow Summit. The meeting will take place at 10:00am and is an opportunity for people to see displays of the initial presentation, go on a short hike along a general proposed route of the trail, and attendees will be able to ask questions and provide their input or suggestions. According to Phil Hamilton, Trails Foundation President, the Trails Foundation has been working with the Forest Service to make what he believes will be an “epic trail that will attract users from all over the country when completed.” The Trails Foundation is a non-profit organization, dedicated to creating, enhancing, preserving and promoting non-motorized use of Big Bear Valley trails and roadways for the enjoyment and transportation of residents and visitors. Last year the Trails Foundation successfully reopened the Seven Oaks Trail after it had been overgrown for decades, by working with the Forest Service and many helpful volunteers. Ride Around The Bear Brings 400 Cyclists Through Big Bear

Big Bear, Ca, June 9, 2011, 3:00pm - This Saturday, the Orange County Wheelmen, a bicycle club, is hosting the 27^th annual Ride Around The Bear. This bicycle ride will take over 400 cyclists from Redlands, up HWY 18 past the Arrowhead Highlands and Running Springs, to the North Shore of Big Bear Lake and then back down HWY 38. This challenging ride will provide riders with 9000 feet of elevation gain in 106 miles. Motorists are encouraged to share the road with cyclists and watch for them along the route. There will be various aid stations along the route to provide riders with water, nutrition, and basic bike repairs. The Big Bear Cycling Association will be running one of these aid stations, which will be located at Dana Point Park in the Grout Bay area of Fawnskin. There will also be four roving vehicles that will aid riders in need. Organizers for the event ask that you please watch for riders, and share the road.

Team Big Bear Mountain Bike Race Is Full Of Big Bear Locals!

Big Bear, Ca, May, 23, 2011, 1:00pm - The locals came out in full force this past weekend for the Big Bear Shootout #1 mountain bike race. Teams Bear Valley Bikes, Chains Required, Steven K Pro Sports, and Loeka teams were well represented with Romolo Forcino and Ely Woody from team Chains Required placing 4th and 5th in the Pro Mens Feild. Local Big Bear rider Lauren Gregg Riding for team Loeka took first place for Cat 1 women 19-29, and had the best Cat 1 ’ time for the entire field. The Bear Valley Bikes women’s team was well represented with many top spots, and podiums for the ladies including: Cythina Miranda, Veronica Eliasson, Alison Hyde, Louise Boyer and Michelle Russell). The Williams family continue to do well with Evan Williams placing first in Category 2 Juniors, older brother Casey placing second in Category 1 Juniors and 11 year old Elle Williams placing 2nd for Junior Women 14 and under. Another family of cyclists to watch out for are the Burton Boys with nine year old Alex Burton took first place for the Junior men 10 and under, beating the rest of the competition by over 8 minutes. Brothers Zachary and Ryan Burton also did well placing 4th and 2nd in their feilds. The next Big Bear Shoot Out will be on June 19th, and will also be one of the events in the Conquer the Bear, and Conquer the Cub series. For more information go to TeamBigBear.com.

Weekly Ride Schedule Kicks Off With Community Ride

Big Bear, Ca, May 6, 2011, 12:00pm - As warmer weather has returned to the Big Bear Valley, the Big Bear Cycling Association will kick off their weekly ride schedule tomorrow with the first Community Ride of the season. The Cycling Association has a full schedule planned this year, adding a few new weekly rides including Mountain Bike Mondays, and Timed Training Ride Thursdays, where participants will take part in timed training rides where times will be recorded and cyclists can then measure their progress throughout the season. The Cycling Association encourages everyone to come to the Community Ride tomorrow. “Dust off your bike, and come ride with us,” said Craig Smith, President of the Cycling Association, “this ride is for everyone.” For the first Community Ride, a mechanic will be on hand to do basic bike repairs at 8:00am. The Community Ride will meet at the Copper Q in the Village on Pine Knot. “Community rides are social, easy, fun bike rides,” said Smith, “and all ages are invited and encouraged to come ride.” For more information go to www.bigbearcycling.com.

Big Bear, Ca, April 7, 2011, 8:00am – Bear Valley Bikes, the local bike shop and bike team that originally started in 1993 as Big Bear Bikes has gone through many changes over the years. In 2000 current owner Derek Hermon took over the shop and the team, and this year has established Bear Valley Bike’s first ever stand alone Women’s Team. “To get more women involved in cycling is our goal,” said Hermon, “Our aim is to both support our current female riders as well as introduce new members to the sport and to racing.” The new Bear Valley Bike’s women’s team consists of 16 riders so far, including 10 year old Mnt. Bike National Champion Elle Williams, adventure racer Karen Lundgren, and runner Michelle Russell. The team is for women of all levels, and beginners are always welcome. Russell rides for the team, and is currently in second place in the Kenda Cup Series, in the women’s Cat 3 division ages 40-49. Russell has been riding bikes recreationally for years, however it was last year when her husband encouraged her to race that she first tried. “I came in dead last but had the best time ever,” said Russell. “I like that Bear Valley Bikes has encouraged all levels of women riders to participate in Mountain Bike Racing this season. Meeting other like minded women who don’t mind getting muddy once in awhile is fantastic!” Russell appreciates the encouragement she and the other women receive from Hermon and the other Bear Valley Bikes riders, and is looking forward to the next race that will take place in Big Bear on May 22^nd. Hermon told KBHR that once the trails thaw out, women’s only training rides will start. Rules Of The Road For Cyclists

Big Bear, Ca, March 30, 2011, 12:00pm -With spring weather returning more bicycles have been spotted around town. Bicycles are used for recreation, and as transportation around the valley, therefore KBHR and the Big Bear Cycling Association want to remind motorists and cyclists of rules of the road to keep Big Bear a safe environment for cyclists. A bicycle operated on a roadway or highway shoulder shall be operated in the same direction as vehicles are required to drive on the roadway. Cyclists are required to give hand signals when turning or stopping. A person under 18 years of age is required to wear a helmet when riding a bike, and although it is not required for those over 18, it is highly recommended. It is unlawful for any person to ride a bicycle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage or any drug; persons who do ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be arrested. Cyclists who travel during the nighttime hours when it is dark are required to have front and back lights on their bicycle. Although it is not required, it is a good idea for cyclists to carry a bike pump and spare tube while riding at all times in case of a flat tire. John and Dave Emig Travel To Alaska for Susitna 100 Bike Race

Big Bear, Ca, February 16, 2011, 3:00pm - John and Dave Emig, father and son adventure seekers from the Big Bear Valley leave today (Left February 16^th) for Alaska. Their search for adventure has brought them to accept the challenge of 100-mile bike ride through the cold, remote wilderness of Alaska for the Susitna 100 48 hour bike race. The race will take place in the Susitna River Valley, which is just north of Anchorage Alaska. The race takes place on February 19^th through the 21^st, and is a qualifying race for the 2011 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc race, which is an ultra endurance event, held in France. Dave told KBHR it was his father John who had the idea to participate in such a grueling competition. The Emig’s are prepared for the race, and are looking forward to the adventure.
