Public Hearing on Parcel Tax Set for March 21st

Big Bear, Ca, February 14, 2012, 4:00pm – Due to the recent proposed budget cuts to the Bear Valley Unified School District, including cuts to the home to school transportation fund, the BVUSD Board of Trustees is considering the option of funding through a parcel tax.  Part of the process to implement a parcel tax is to hold a public hearing on the tax, to allow the public to find out more information, voice opinions and ask questions.  The trustees will then consider adopting a resolution proposing to establish a qualified special tax to be submitted for voter approval on July 10th.  The parcel tax would not exceed $99 per year for a total of six years for a variety of educational programs, including the maintenance of programs in math, science, reading, writing, art, music, as well as for the retention of qualified teachers and keeping schools safe and clean, and would guarantee an exception for certain seniors and disabled persons.  The public hearing is set for March 21st of this year at 6:30pm in the Library of Big Bear Middle School, and everyone is invited to...

Attempted Murder Suspect Christina Johnson Arrested In Big Bear

Big Bear, Ca, February 14, 2012, 12:00pm – Attempted murder suspect Christina Johnson was arrested after deputies of the Big Bear Sheriff Station located her vehicle in the 39000 block of Willow Landing in Big Bear Lake on Monday night.  Johnson was wanted for arrest after stabbing a man working for a repossession company on Friday, February 10th in the Lake Arrowhead area.  The victim was attempting to repossess a vehicle that Johnson had bought using fraudulent information.  Johnson stabbed the victim five times, rammed his vehicle repeatedly with her car, and attempted to hit the victim with her vehicle while fleeing the scene.  Deputies found Johnson’s vehicle parked at a house on Willow Landing, and arrested her at the location without incident.  Johnson is currently being held on $500,000 bail. Kent Kessler Recognized by City Council for Graffiti Removal Efforts

Big Bear, Ca, February 14, 2012, 12:00pm – At Monday nights City Council meeting, Kent Kessler, a member of Big Bear Valley Citizens on Patrol, received a proclamation from the City of Big Bear Lake for his graffiti removal cleanup efforts.  According to Tiffany Swantek, Public Information Officer for the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station, Mr. Kessler has been a local business owner for the past 21 years.  Over the past 17 years, Mr. Kessler has taken it upon himself to perform graffiti removal and cleanup efforts along the highways leading into and out of the Big Bear Valley.  This includes graffiti removal on road signage, boulders, electrical boxes, guard rails and wherever offensive and unsightly graffiti may exist.  Kessler has been a volunteer member of the Big Bear Valley Citizens on Patrol Unit since November, 2009.  When he joined COP’s, Mr. Kessler brought the graffiti removal program to the attention of the Sheriff’s Department.  Cleanup efforts are now done by Mr. Kessler and other COP members as part of their duties as public safety volunteers of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station.  The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station is grateful to Mr. Kessler for his continued dedication to law enforcement and his commitment to the community.
