Hiker rescued by Sheriff’s Aviation on the Pacific Crest Trail

Big Bear, CA – On Wednesday, May 31, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Sheriff’s Volunteer Forces contacted the Aviation Unit regarding a hiker who activated a Personal Locater Beacon (PLB) on Pacific Crest Trail, near the North Fork area. The GPS coordinates from the activation showed the hiker, identified as Jared Lee Ewing, was approximately 6 miles south of Onyx Peak. 40 King 2, with a crew of two Deputies, responded to the GPS coordinates to search for Ewing. Aircraft Accident Under Investigation

Big Bear City, CA, January 26, 2016 – Yesterday morning, while performing a daily inspection, Big Bear City Airport staff found a single engine, tail wheel aircraft that was lying upside down near the runway. Following standard procedures, the airport was temporarily closed and FAA, fire,  and law enforcement personnel were contacted. There was no pilot present and the airport was told by FAA authorities not to disturb the scene. Big Bear City Airport Selected for High Altitude Testing

Big Bear City, CA, November 19, 2015 – The Big Bear City Airport was selected by Agusta Westland Helicopters as a high altitude airport to test the AW169 helicopter. The tests they are performing are required to gather data at low speeds (up to 50KTS) around the hover with a CARGO load of one ton connected to the helicopter HOOK. They recently completed such tests in Thermal for the low altitude envelope and Big Bear is perfect for the Mid/High envelope. They will engage the taxiways for several runs at different aspect angles and will be hover taxiing down the runway to test the aircraft’s performance. Big Bear Airport Has a New General Manager

Big Bear City, CA, May 21, 2015 – The Big Bear Airport District Board of Directors has named Dustin Leno, A.A.E., as the new General Manager of the Big Bear City Airport. His first day with the airport was May 11, 2015. In a Special Board of Directors Meeting on April 24, Mr. Leno’s one year employment contract was approved, clearing the way for him to take the helm of the Big Bear City Airport. “We – both the Board and staff – are very excited to welcome Dustin and his wife Summer to the Big Bear Community and Airport. Dustin’s experience and credentials are aligned to what we were searching for in a new General Manager. We were very impressed by Dustin’s straight forward manner and are certain he will contribute enormously to the Big Bear Valley,” said Board President Julie Smith. Mr. Leno has more than twenty years of experience in the aviation field including airports, flight operations, and Fixed Base Operator (FBO) management.
