Big Bear, CA, May 24, 2016 – Learning and good nutrition does not end when school lets out.  The USDA Summer Food Service Program helps provide nutritious meals to children so they are better fueled with healthy food to learn and grow. The SFSP is a federally-funded, state-administered program. LAUSD Schools Closed Due to Credible Threat

Big Bear, CA, December 15, 2015 – All schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District are closed today due to the receipt of a “credible threat of violence.” Bear Valley Unified School District wants to assure everyone that they are following ongoing reports on this situation and will keep us informed of any circumstance that may affect students in the Big Bear Valley. Additionally, San Bernardino Valley College remains closed today due to the receipt of a credible threat on Monday, but has been cleared to reopen Wednesday, December 16, after a thorough search of the campus. BVUSD is in contact with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and will keep us apprised of any information pertinent to all of us in Big Bear Valley. The County Superintendent of Schools reports “in San Bernardino County, no K-12 school districts have reported being closed this morning.” Tiffany Swantek of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Department offered the following information: In Big Bear, at this time, we have had no indication or any reports of any threats to the Big Bear Valley. BVUSD Announces New Superintendent of Schools

Big Bear, CA, December 10, 2015 – At a regular board meeting held on December 9, 2015, the Governing Board of Bear Valley Unified School District employed Dr. Mary Suzuki, as Superintendent of Schools for the District. The Board’s action was by unanimous vote. Dr. Suzuki’s selection was the culmination of an extensive nationwide search conducted by the Governing Board and assisted by Leadership Associates. Dr. Suzuki comes to Bear Valley with 24 years of experience as an educator. She has served as a teacher at multiple grade levels, literacy coach, principal, Director of Curriculum and 21st Century Learning, chairperson for the California Technology Assistance Project, and Assistant Superintendent of Learning Support Services. After extensive paper screening, reference checks and interviews, representatives of the Governing Board visited the community of Covina, where Dr. Suzuki has served as Director of 21st Century Learning. They interviewed community members, parents, teachers, students, principals, district administrators, school staff, and board members. The visitation team consistently heard high praise and accolades regarding Dr. Suzuki and felt that she is an excellent match for the Bear Valley community.
