BVUSD Announces New Superintendent of Schools

Big Bear, CA, December 10, 2015 – At a regular board meeting held on December 9, 2015, the Governing Board of Bear Valley Unified School District employed Dr. Mary Suzuki, as Superintendent of Schools for the District. The Board’s action was by unanimous vote. Dr. Suzuki’s selection was the culmination of an extensive nationwide search conducted by the Governing Board and assisted by Leadership Associates. Dr. Suzuki comes to Bear Valley with 24 years of experience as an educator. She has served as a teacher at multiple grade levels, literacy coach, principal, Director of Curriculum and 21st Century Learning, chairperson for the California Technology Assistance Project, and Assistant Superintendent of Learning Support Services. After extensive paper screening, reference checks and interviews, representatives of the Governing Board visited the community of Covina, where Dr. Suzuki has served as Director of 21st Century Learning. They interviewed community members, parents, teachers, students, principals, district administrators, school staff, and board members. The visitation team consistently heard high praise and accolades regarding Dr. Suzuki and felt that she is an excellent match for the Bear Valley community. Community Input Needed for Superintendent Search

Big Bear, CA, September 8, 2015 – The Governing Board of Bear Valley Unified School District will be selecting a new district superintendent. The trustees are soliciting community input about the desired characteristics to be used in recruiting and selecting this person. For instance, what personal and professional qualities for an incoming superintendent will be a match for the Bear Valley Unified School District? Dr. Kent Bechler and Dr. Mike Escalante of Leadership Associates were selected to advise the Board in this important process. They will be in our district on September 16th and 17th . Individual input from members of the community (parents, employees, and others interested in our district) is desired. Individual input may be offered by individual or group appointment, letter, email or direct telephone conversation. Additionally, an online survey will be available on the District’s website. BVUSD Superintendent Kurt Madden Resigns

Big Bear, CA, May 12, 2015 – At Monday’s Special Board meeting of the Bear Valley Unified School District, Superintendent Kurt Madden gave his resignation to the Board effective July 1st.  Mr. Madden has accepted a position in the Bonita Unified School District as Superintendent.  Chairman, Bev Grabe, expressed that the Board sadly accepted his resignation.  Kegham Tashjian and Dick Bray, advisors from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of School’s office, lead the discussion to explain the process of finding a replacement for Mr. Madden using County services that are offered to BVUSD at no charge.  Mr. Tashjian outlined a proposed process and timeline for the Superintendent job search.   The search process is lengthy and includes meetings with Board members, representatives of classified, certificated and management staff as well as community member focus groups to  determine the requirements and qualifications of what is needed in our District for our future Superintendent.  The ultimate decision making powers are held by the Board members.  Mr. Tashjian went on to explain that the time frame of finding a permanent Superintendent is too short and the Board will need to consider an Interim Superintendent.  Mr. Tashjian has served our District as Interim Superintendent in the past but is currently unavailable. Appears Departure is Imminent for Two Top BVUSD Administrators

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 28, 2015 – In a letter released today by Kurt Madden, Superintendent of the Bear Valley Unified School District, addressed to school district employees, community members, and the media, it was disclosed that top administrators, Kurt Madden, Superintendent, and Walter Con, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, are both being considered for positions in other school districts.  Mr. Madden for a position in the Bonita Unified School District and Mr. Con for a position in the Orcutt Union School District.  Part of the exploration process includes community visitations by the different districts to conduct interviews of various staff and community members which will take place this Wednesday and Thursday.  In addition, the letter states that updates will be provided if an official decision is made relative to their employment...

School Closure Not On This Year’s Agenda

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 15, 2015 – At Monday’s Special Board Meeting of the Bear Valley Unified School District, a presentation was made by Ron Peavy and Phil Hamilton, co-chairs for the 7-11 Committee, a district advisory group consisting of community members which was formed to evaluate and make recommendations to the Board regarding facilities.  Due to declining enrollment and aging facilities, many discussions have surrounded the issue of whether to close a school site or other district property.  The recommendation of the 7-11 Committee included multiple options for the Board to consider in their evaluation including maintaining the current site configurations or consolidating schools and selling or leasing a school property.  Ultimately, the Board agreed that there will be no changes regarding the closure of a school or other school facility for the 2015-2016 school year.  Additionally, the Board will continue the discussion to review enrollment data at regular intervals over the next year during scheduled Board Workshop Meetings which are open to the public for...
