Fatal Accident Shuts Down Highway 38 on Friday

Big Bear, CA – On Friday, July 21, at approximately 2:23 pm, Arrowhead Area Officers responded to the scene of a traffic collision on SR-38, East of Angelus Oaks. Mr. Frank J. Zuppinger, a resident of Big Bear City, was driving a gray, 1994, Jeep Grand Cherokee, westbound on SR-38, east of Angelus Oaks. For unknown reasons, the Grand Cherokee left the roadway and entered onto the south shoulder of SR-38 where it overturned. Mr. Zuppinger was trapped and would later be extricated by witnesses. After extrication, it was determined Mr. Zuppinger was not breathing and CPR was performed by witnesses until relieved by San Bernardino County Fire personnel. Overturned Dumptruck Closes SR-330 For Several Hours Yesterday

Big Bear, CA, August 24, 2016 – Yesterday, at approximately 8:40 am, Police Officer A. Gunnoe, was traveling northbound on SR-330 when he observed a three axle Peterbuilt dump truck traveling southbound on SR-330 at 40 to 45 MPH, smoking from all of its wheels. Officer Gunnoe turned around and attempted to catch up to the dump truck. As the Officer was approaching, he observed the dump truck through a cloud of smoke and dust starting to travel sideways on the highway. Consequently, the dump truck overturned onto its right side and slid into a white, 2004 Toyota Sienna, traveling northbound. Officer Gunnoe stopped and walked over to the dump truck and found the driver, a 52 year old resident of Fontana, California, inside of the cab. The victim was then extricated by Officer Gunnoe and a passerby though the windshield of the dump truck. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. The driver of the Toyota was not injured and was able to drive his vehicle home. The dump truck was loaded with asphalt and spilled its load across both lanes of the highway. Fatal Traffic Accident Near Stanfield Cutoff

Big Bear Lake, CA, July 19, 2012, 7:45am – (UPDATE) – The Coroner has released the name of the man who died in Tuesday’s auto accident. The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department received a 911 call reporting a vehicle that rolled over and landed in Baker Pond in Big Bear City. Deputies found a 2003 Saturn upside down in about 3 feet of water. The passenger, David Aroian, a 22-year-old resident of Apple Valley, was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead on July 17 at 6:34pm. The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the incident.
