Teenager Profits From Public Speaking

Big Bear Lake, CA March 6, 2014 – Big Bear High School student Elizabeth Johnson took home the $200 prize for 1st place at the annual Speech Trek contest for high school students. Her five-minute speech addressed the topic of “Women at the Top…Why Not?” Judges will now view performance DVDs of first place winners from throughout the state and send the top three to compete at the state competition this spring. There, the public speakers will compete for even bigger cash awards. Multiple local businesses supported the local contest, which was sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) produced in collaboration with Bearly Speaking Toastmasters. Beau Revac won Second Place and $150, Arturo Atilano placed Third taking home $100, and Madison Waner took Fourth Place and $50–all at Keller Williams Realty in Big Bear Lake. “Women in the Arts” Celebration Will Benefit Local Students

Big Bear Lake, CA, August 29, 2013 – The Big Bear Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was formed in 1983 to enhance the professional and personal growth of members and young women and girls in the community. On Sunday, September 8, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., the group will present its annual “Women in the Arts” celebration at the lakeside home of Carol and Don Bremer. The afternoon will feature nine local women authors, artists and musicians — three from each field — who will offer a panel discussion on their creative process, perform live music, and have their artwork, music and books on display and for sale. Wine, food from local eateries, and silent auction baskets will round out the program. High school speakers compete on important topics

Big Bear Lake, CA, February 25, 2013 – The Big Bear Branch of the American Association of University Women is partnering with Bearly Speaking Toastmasters to present the second annual Eleanor Stem Allen Memorial Speech Contest. This year’s topic is “Sexual Harassment in Schools…big deal?” and is open to all high school students. The speakers compete for cash prizes, and the contest –also known as Speech Trek – has served as a stepping stone for past students. The winner of last year’s inaugural contest, Elizabeth Johnson, went on to capture 5th place at the State level. Her presentation on “Bullying” earned an additional cash prize for her and statewide recognition to the Big Bear Valley.
