Big Bear, CA, May 24, 2012, 12 noon - KBHR learned today that Michelle Case, the newly hired principal for Big Bear Elementary School for the upcoming school year 2012-2013, would not be accepting the position after all. In an email sent to Kurt Madden, Superintendent of the Bear Valley Unified School District, written by her husband, Jeff, they regret to inform the District that Mrs. Case will not be able to accept the position for medical reasons involving Mr. Case. Michelle Case was only recently hired by a unanimous vote at a Special Board meeting of the BVUSD Board of Trustees on May 2nd and was chosen from 44 applicants to replace current BBES Principal Jeanette Haston who will be returning to teaching in the classroom. Mrs. Case is from Las Vegas, Nevada acting as Assistant Principal at two Clark County school sites. According to Superintendent Madden, the District will now resume the process of searching for applicants to fill the position.

Big Bear Lake, CA, May 21, 2012, noon – Big Bear Valley is completely surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest and offers a network of trails for hikers and bikers. That’s why The Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation is promoting the 12 Trails of Big Bear 2012 Challenge. The Trails Foundation has crafted a list that includes 12 of Big Bear’s finest trail adventures. Complete with online trail guides, the list will get you outside to both familiar and new places. Don’t think you know what to expect. While the 12 Trails of Big Bear has several popular trails, more of them are off the beaten track, and will get you out on new adventures. Their website trailsfoundation.org has maps, directions, and guides to each of the 12 Trails of Big Bear. The list has been designed so anyone can do some, if not all of them. And if you finish off all 12 Trails in 2012, that doesn’t mean you’re finished. The Trails Foundation says they’ve planned it out so there will be at least 3 full years of 12 Trails. And adding things up, that’s a lot of ground to explore in Big Bear.

San Bernardino, CA, May 21, 2012, noon - For the sixth year in a row, the County of San Bernardino has been honored for producing one of the best government budget documents in North America. The Board of Supervisors has recognized the County’s budget staff for receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The award represents a significant achievement by the County of San Bernardino and reflects the county’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. To receive the budget award the county had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories to receive the award. The County of San Bernardino’s award-winning budgets can be viewed on the county’s website at http://www.sbcounty.gov/cao/.

Big Bear Lake, CA, May 18, 2012 – Frenchman Sylvain Georges of AG2R La Mondiale won the climb to Big Bear of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California. Exhausted and completely rung out he crossed the finish line with the main field of riders closing in. Thousands of spectators watched cheered and rang their cow bells as Sylvian dug deep up Summit Boulevard to the finish arena. The Frenchman Sylvain nearly collapsed then sat on the pavement as his team mates and fellow riders came to congratulate him on his emotional and grueling stage win.

Stage Winner Sylvain Georges went on to say that this was the biggest win in his career. He felt strong early on in the stage and knew he had the legs to finish. Near the end he knew it was all or nothing so he gave it his all and came out victorious.

Big Bear Lake, CA, May 18, 2012, 5:00pm – Thursday night, May 17, a very lucky little bear moved into his new home. The 4 year-old black bear that will be named Pooh was scheduled for euthanization because he continually raided a beekeepers hives. After destroying $8000 worth of honey, the beekeeper got a permit to capture the bear. The bear ended up at the Fish and Game facility in Rancho Cordova. The Wardens quickly figured out that Pooh was a sweet tempered bear and they made a life saving call to The Big Bear Rescue Zoo. The Big Bear Rescue Zoo is a rehabilitation facility offering injured, orphaned and imprinted wild animals a safe haven temporarily while they heal, or permanently as they are unable to survive on their own. 90% of all the animals brought to The Big Bear Zoo Rescue for rehabilitation are successfully released back into their native environment. Those that remain on exhibit are either too injured, or have been imprinted by humans and cannot be released back into the wild to care for themselves. Pooh is another success story. Without Big Bear Rescue Zoo stepping up to the plate and providing Pooh a safe place to live out his life, this story would not have a happy ending. The Big Bear Rescue Zoo is a Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District/County of San Bernardino facility.
