The Kiwanis Club of Big Bear Valley is the winning spelling bee team, now two years running. The Kiwanians, along with the Friends of the Moonridge Zoo, the Women’s Club of Big Bear Lake, Friends of the Library, Bearly Speaking Toastmasters, and Keller Williams Big Bear Real Estate, participated in the Spell-a-Thon hosted by the Big Bear Library this month. The annual event raises funds and community awareness to support the library’s Bear Valley Read-to-Learn Adult Literacy Program, which assists locals with tutoring in literacy skills, including reading, writing, English improvement, math and computer use. The winning spellers of Kiwanis took home this year’s trophy after correctly spelling the winning word of the day: “bromeliad.” To arrange for literacy tutoring, or to volunteer an hour a week to the program as a tutor, contact Marta at the Big Bear Library’s literary office at 866-4512. (Oh, and just so you know, bromeliad is a type of epiphytic tropical American plant, including the pineapple.)
