Given the snow over the weekend, which the resorts claim dumped up to a foot of fresh powder, the City of Big Bear Lake has called snow conditions into effect, so no parking on city streets to allow for snowplowing operations. CalTrans has called R2 chain requirements for all roads to, from and within the Big Bear Valley. An R2 requirement means that you must have chains on the drive wheels of your vehicle, unless driving a four-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels and carrying chains. (If stopping to put on chains, please be sure you are safely out of the roadway before doing so.) As of Monday morning, Highway 18, west of the Big Bear Dam is closed, due to a snow slide on Arctic Circle, which has blocked several vehicles. If leaving the mountain, drivers can use the highways at the east end of the Valley, either Highway 38 through Angelus Oaks to Redlands, or Highway 18 down the back way to the desert communities.
