Last Saturday, local high school students Tori Waner, Jodi Cline and Zack Meyer competed in Rotary District 5330’s 11th Annual Music Competition in the vocal semifinals and finals at the University of Redlands. These three Big Bear High School students were among 23 vocalists selected to compete in the District’s semifinal round. The students each performed two challenging numbers–one popular, one classical.
When the panel of three judges announced the nine finalists, Zack Meyer was the only freshman chosen to proceed to the finals level. Although he didn’t ultimately place, Rotary Youth Services Director David Caretto reports that “all three Big Bear vocalists performed with exceptional vocal technique, stage presence, and poise.”
Several former Rotary Big Bear Idol vocal winners are studying music at top universities and performing around the world, including Kyrstie Lane, Sam Harris Daniel Rich, and Julie Cline. Some Big Bear vocalists were invited to join the Young Americans, such as Caitlin Barney, Rayanna Lindgreen, Byrn Moor, Beth Antmann, and Amber Carpenter. The Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake annually conducts its “Big Bear Idol” competition at the PAC to coincide with the District Music competition. Rich and Virginia Lambert have co-chaired the committee that puts on the competition for local high school vocalists and instrumental musicians.
