Big Bear, CA, April 3, 2015 – The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Gary Simrak. Simrak is wanted on an active felony warrant in the amount of $75,000 for possession of a controlled substance for sale, cultivation of marijuana/hashish, and maintaining a drug house. Man Commits Suicide at Big Bear Jail

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 1, 2015 – On Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 1:30 p.m., Gilbert Mesa arrived at the Big Bear Station to provide a statement regarding an Assault with a Deadly Weapon investigation, in which he was named as the suspect. Following the interview, Mesa was arrested and booked into the Big Bear jail. Mesa was the sole occupant of the cell.  At 8:15 p.m., the jail deputy observed Mesa, and Mesa acknowledged the deputy.  At 8:50 p.m. the jail deputy was conducting his observation logs when he saw Mesa hanging from the top of the bunk, with his shoelaces tied around his neck.  Deputies quickly cut the shoelaces from his neck, called for medical aid and began CPR.  Fire personnel responded and transported Mesa to Bear Valley Community Hospital.  On Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 1:30 a.m., Mesa was transferred to Riverside Community Hospital.  On Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 9:19 p.m. Mesa was pronounced dead.   Riverside County Coroner conducted an autopsy on Wednesday, April 1, 2015.  The cause of death was determined to be Anoxic Encephalopathy due to hanging.  Sheriff’s Homicide Investigators are conducting the investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this investigation is urged to contact Detective Eddie Bachman at 909-387-3589.  Callers wishing to remain anonymous are urged to call the We-tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME or you may leave information on the We-Tip Hotline at...

Human Remains Found on Forest Trail in Big Bear City

Big Bear City, CA, March 30, 2015 – According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, on Friday, March 27, 2015, at approximately 11:05 a.m., a hiker reported finding what he believed to be human remains in the forested area North of Myrtle Avenue and North Shore Drive in Big Bear City.  Deputies and detectives from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station responded to the scene and confirmed the remains are human.  Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail were requested and responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.  The victim’s identification and cause of death will be determined and released by the Coroner Division of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.  Anyone having information on this matter is requested to contact Detective Jonathan Woods at 909-387-3589.  Information can also be reported anonymously by calling WE-TIP at (800) 78-CRIME or online at...

SIBBV Announces 2015 “Man About Town” Candidates

Big Bear Lake, CA March 27, 2015 – On Thursday, Soroptimist International of Big Bear Valley held their annual “Man About Town” kick off campaign to announce this year’s three contestants.  This year’s theme is “Charging Forward for Woman’s Health”.  Man About Town is the organization’s biggest fundraiser with the goal this year to raise money to support local women’s health programs including a women’s health symposium and their annual mammogram program at the hospital held in partnership with the Hospital Foundation.  This year’s candidates include Craig Brewster, Mike Kostiuk, and Rob Robbins.  Craig Brewster is co-owner and operator of his family’s business, Nottingham’s Restaurant and the Robinhood Resort, Mike Kostiuk is owner and operator of Murray’s Saloon and Rob Robbins sits on the Board of Directors of the hospital for the Bear Valley Community Healthcare District.  This year, each of the three candidates are limited to two fundraising events.  Each dollar raised accounts for one vote for the candidate.  The contestant who raises the most money will be crowned Man About Town 2015 at the May 17th...

Suspect Sought For Burglary and Assault at Shopping Centers

Big Bear Lake, CA, March 17, 2015 – Shortly after 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 14th, deputies of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station responded to a disturbance in the Interlaken Shopping Center in Big Bear Lake.  A witness observed a Hispanic male adult break into a vehicle in the parking lot and take items from inside the car.  The witness chased the male suspect, who brandished a weapon and made threatening statements.  The suspect then ran into the open field behind the shopping center.  Less than 10 minutes later, deputies responded to a report of an attempted vehicle theft in the K-Mart parking lot.  An unknown Hispanic male adult, matching the same description as the suspect from the Interlaken Shopping Center, broke into a vehicle in the parking lot.  The suspect fled the area when the vehicle owner yelled at him to get out of the car.  Deputies of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station and the Sheriff’s Aviation Division conducted a thorough ground and aerial search of the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.  Following these incidents, the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station received several photographs of the suspect from private citizens via social media.  As a result of the information received from observant witnesses, deputies were able to identify the suspect as 23-year-old Michael Reyes, Jr.  Reyes has active felony warrants issued against him for prior criminal history...
