A Busy Week for Big Bear Law Enforcement

Big Bear Lake, CA, August 13, 2015 – It has been a busy week for Big Bear law enforcement.  On August 8th, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Big Bear Station responded to several reports of gunshots heard in Big Bear Lake. Deputies were directed to a residence in the 39000 block of Lark Spur as the possible source of the gunshots.  They were confronted by Michael Demayo on the front deck where he pointed a revolver at the deputies.  He was later arrested without injuries.  Deputies found the revolver, on the porch, along with empty shell casings. Demayo was booked for assault with a firearm on a peace officer and negligent discharge of a firearm. On Monday, August 10 deputies responded to the report of a Burglary and Assault in the 42000 block of Evergreen in Big Bear Lake.  Suspect, Dennis Pitner, went to the victim’s home and used a large rock to break in the unlocked front door of the home, then used the rock to damage the interior wall, he then assaulted the residents of the home.  Pitner resisted arrest but was taken into custody.  Pitner’s unusual behavior is under investigation and may be related to intoxication and/or psychiatric issues. BVCHD Announces Resignation of CEO and CFO

Big Bear Lake, CA, July 28, 2015, 5:00pm -Bear Valley Community Healthcare District has approved leadership transition changes recommended by it’s new management advisory firm, Quorum Health Resources.  Donna Nicely, President of the Hospital Board, has announced the resignation of Interim Chief Executive Officer, Randy Simmons and Chief Financial Officer, Wade Sturgeon.  “We appreciate the contribution made to our hospital by Mr. Simmons and Mr. Sturgeon and we wish them well in their future endeavors”, said Nicely.  “Our Board was concerned about recent management decisions, and with Quorum here, we were able to respond quickly and bring in Quorum executives to make a seamless transition”.  As of July 28th, Quorum executive, Barbara Brooks will be on-site providing Quorum oversight to operations.  Quorum division Vice President, Bill Donatelli, will install a new Interim CEO, David Faulkner on Monday, August 3rd.  On August 5th, Donatelli plans to have options for the Board to select an Interim CFO.  The Hospital Board will be closely involved to find the best candidates for this hospital and community.  “There is no current time frame for the searches to be completed”, Nicely explained.  “Quorum management services provides immediate interim resources to minimize disruption within the hospital while allowing the Board time to choose a CEO and CFO who can meet our needs and fill the significant role executives play in the hospital and the...

Missing Person – Robert “Bob” Ramsey, Resident of Big Bear City

Big Bear City, CA, July 9, 2015, 4:00pm – The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station is requesting the public’s assistance in locating missing person Robert Ramsey.  Ramsey was last seen on March 5, 2015, when he was released from Riverside Community Hospital.  He is known to voluntarily disappear for months at a time without notifying family or friends.  Unaware of his whereabouts for over two months, family members reported Robert Ramsey as a missing person on May 9.  To date, all attempts to locate Ramsey have been unsuccessful.  Ramsey is a 65-year-old white male adult, 5’9″ tall, 230 lbs., with brown hair and brown eyes.  Anyone having contact with Robert Ramsey is requested to call Detective Jim Wijnhamer of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station at (909) 866-0100. Sterling Fire Reported in the City of San Bernardino

San Bernardino, CA, June 25, 2015, 8pm – A new fire was reported at 6:30pm called the Sterling Fire now up to 60 acres in size and located east of Del Rosa in the City of San Bernardino, west of Highway 330 and west of the San Manuel Casino.  Calfire, the City of San Bernardino and the US Forest Service are responding with dozers, engines and crews.  According to fire authorities, because of the proximity of helicopters fighting the Lake Fire, quick air response is expected on the Sterling Fire.  At 8:10pm, CalTrans reported that the Sterling Fire tanker...

Arrest Made in Homicide Fire Coverup

Big Bear Lake, CA – June 24, 2015 –   As we previously reported on April 28, 2015, at approximately 11:20 a.m., deputies of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a deceased male at a residence in the 42000 block of Willow Avenue in Big Bear Lake. A relative of the deceased called the Sheriff’s Department after finding the victim, 33-year-old George Kovacevich, dead at the location. Deputies determined Kovacevich to be the victim of a gunshot wound. John David Simmons was identified the next day as the suspect in this matter. Simmons was located and found to be suffering from a gunshot wound. Suspect Simmons was interviewed and then transported to a local area hospital for medical attention. Investigators learned that Simmons and Kovacevich met at the location to trade stolen guns. An argument ensued between Kovacevich and Simmons. Kovacevich shot the suspect Simmons. Simmons returned fire, killing Kovacevich. Simmons then took all of the stolen guns, along with the victim’s identification, and fled the scene. Several hours later, Simmons returned to the cabin where he spread a flammable liquid inside the residence and left the gas stove on in an attempt to destroy any evidence and conceal his involvement in the homicide.
